Not too long ago, over a cup of coffee, an old friend presented me with a thoughtful query. “How do you feel when someone takes your processes, tools, and procedures and improve upon them?” He was referencing my impact across various emerging industries.

After a moment, my response was as swift as it was reflective. "It doesn't bother me," I replied. "I really haven't given it much thought." He probed further, highlighting the contributions I've made to fields now booming with innovation, but my stance remained unchanged. I've always been one to compete with no one but myself, focusing on the present moment, unburdened by what has been or what others have done with my original ideas.

Many of you might be familiar with my work from the early days of webhosting at Teleflora. In 1999, when the digital age was just a toddler, we spearheaded a novel operation for Teleflora's Global Network, a mammoth task that was an industry first. Today, Teleflora.com thrives, connecting consumers with local florists, a flame ignited years ago still burning vibrantly.

When I left Teleflora, I ventured into another nascent field, online dating. At the dawn of 2001, without a pre-written roadmap, I created all operational areas for the company from all Human Resources, Recruiting efforts to Quality Assurance and a stellar and profitable Customer Service/Sales department and global travel and events program. JDate.com, ChristianMingle.com, and SilverSingles.com are testament to our efforts, still standing strong as prominent brands in the industry. Each subsequent team took my playbook and amplified its potential – that, to me, is the real essence of progress.

Then came GodTube.com, a video-sharing social network for the Christian community. This venture predated the boom of Facebook and YouTube and is now owned by Salem Communication Network, a giant in Christian media. Remarkably, many processes I initially implemented are still in use, a testament to their robustness.

My journey then led me to the realm of e-commerce retail. through my leadership we were among the pioneers partnering with leading marketplaces like Amazon, Walmart.com, and eBay. We navigated uncharted territories of user experience, live inventory, and shipping metrics, developing a proprietary centralized database even before Magento was a concept.

Looking back, my career has been a continuous expedition across emerging terrains, crafting roadmaps where none existed. The ideas I've conceived have been stepping stones for others.

That being said, the journey hasn't been a bed of roses. Success isn't a straight line; it's a product of countless trials and errors. I've stumbled and faltered, but every fall has propelled me forward, imparting valuable lessons. The key is never to surrender control of your life. Learn from everyone around you, and remember, your only competition is the person you see in the mirror.

Inspire and be open to inspiration. Continue to pave the way, knowing that your groundwork might just be the launchpad. The beauty of innovation lies not just in creation but also in the ripple effect it ignites. And that, my friend, doesn't bother me one bit.
