Chapter Seven: How I Chose to Stay Connected—And Why It Changed Everything
You know what people ask me all the time?
“Bill, where’s your how-to book? Where do I find the nuggets of life you put into your podcast, your newsletters, your articles? How did you decide to do this?”
The answer is surprisingly simple: I chose connection.
The World Will Test You
Jobs begin. Jobs end. Careers pivot when you least expect them to. And life has a way of throwing you back into the job market just when you thought you were settled.
In those moments—the kind where the ground feels like it’s been pulled out from under you—you get a choice:
Do you close the door and retreat into yourself? Or do you lean in, open up, and stay connected?
That’s the question I had to answer.
My Decision
When recruiters told me I was “overqualified.” When I sent out twenty résumés a week with no reply. When my bank account stayed stubbornly in the red.
I chose connection.
Not because it was easy. Not because it guaranteed a job. But because connection kept me alive, grounded, and human.
A call to my family. A conversation with a friend. Even a moment of encouragement to a stranger.
Each thread tied me back to life. And little by little, those threads became a net strong enough to carry me forward.
What Connection Really Does
It’s not just about networking or shaking hands at events. Connection is about being seen. It’s about being remembered when the silence gets heavy. It’s about remembering others too.
It grounds you when rejection stings.
It reminds you of your worth when the world overlooks you.
It opens doors you didn’t even know existed.
And most importantly—it keeps you human.
The Lesson
No résumé, no cover letter, no LinkedIn headline will ever be as powerful as a life lived deeply and authentically connected.
Sometimes the opportunity you’re searching for doesn’t come from the application. It comes from the conversation.
That’s the real “how-to.” That’s the book.
