Life is a masterpiece in motion—an ever-shifting, unpredictable symphony of joy, pain, success, and failure. No two days are the same, and in that lies the magic. With each twist and turn, life reveals itself to us in ways we couldn’t possibly imagine, weaving together a journey that’s as blissful as it is intense. And here’s the catch: every moment, every second, is unfolding exactly as it should. Yes, life is a big deal, and guess what? You are a big deal. Your journey, no matter the scars or the setbacks, will always move you toward a better future.
But what is success? Really, what does it mean in a universe so vast and intricate?
I recently came across a statement: “Only take advice from super successful people.” At first glance, it’s just another piece of wisdom circulating in the sea of motivational content. But something about it struck me, made me pause. Super successful? What does that even mean? Is success just about having a ton of money? A perfect marriage? A fleet of cars, homes, and picture-perfect children? Or is it about the power you hold over others?
Here’s where I struggle. I don’t recall ever being in a deep conversation with someone sharing their life lessons and thinking, “Wait, how successful are you again? Should I even be listening to you?” Why would I? Success is not some universal measuring stick; it’s deeply personal. And guess what? We’re all successful in our own way, whether or not the world recognizes it.
Success is a kaleidoscope, shifting and changing depending on where you stand and how the light hits your life. It’s not something you can define with a single image or example. For me, success isn’t about bank accounts or accolades. It’s about growth, about becoming the best version of myself—flaws and all—and helping others along the way. It’s about picking someone up when they stumble, not because they can pay you back, but because that’s what it means to be human. It’s about recognizing that your value isn’t determined by some societal scorecard.
And if we’re honest with ourselves, isn’t that what life is all about?
The real question we should be asking isn’t how much money someone has or how many awards they’ve won. It’s whether they’ve been brave enough to fail, bold enough to rise again, and strong enough to keep going in the face of it all. It’s whether they’ve lived with integrity, lifted others up without expecting anything in return, and stayed true to who they are, no matter what the world throws their way.
So, as I sit here reflecting on what it means to be successful, I think of the man selling ice cream on the beach, the person traveling the world, or even the retiree enjoying their simple, quiet life. I think of the mother balancing work and family, the artist pouring their soul into their craft, and the individual just trying to make it through another day. They are all successful in their own right because they’re living life on their terms, whatever that looks like.
Success, to me, isn’t something you can count or measure. It’s a feeling. It’s looking in the mirror and being proud of who you see. It’s knowing you’ve done your best and that you’ve made a difference, no matter how small.
So here’s the challenge: stop defining success by what society tells you it should be. Success is not a one-size-fits-all formula, nor is it a final destination. It’s the journey, the choices we make, and the love we give along the way. It’s personal, it’s powerful, and it’s yours to define.
The next time you wonder what success looks like, don’t look at someone else’s life. Look at your own. You, right where you are, are enough. Your journey, no matter how unconventional or imperfect, is already a success in the making.
So, how do you define success?
