In today's fast-paced business world, it's easy to get bogged down in emails, meetings, and endless to-do lists. But as a leader, it's important to remember that your team is your greatest asset, and staying connected with them is key to success. That's why "Get out of your office and onto the floor" is my modus operandi.
Every day, when I enter the office, I make a point to walk the floor, stopping strategically in each section of the office to wish everyone a good morning and check in on how their day is going. This initial walk is focused on taking the temperature of the team - are there any concerns they want to bring up regarding a project or a deadline? Depending on the size of the area, I might stop directly in the middle of a large department or between a few smaller departments.
But my check-ins don't stop there. I make a point to walk the floor again mid-day and at the end of the day. By staying connected with my team and checking in regularly, I'm able to catch any issues before they become bigger problems and ensure that everyone feels valued and heard.
In addition to my daily check-ins, I hold a Monday morning meeting that includes a representative from each department and two from customer service. This meeting is meant to last between 15 to 30 minutes and the goal is to determine if there is anything major that may need to be addressed before we all start on our work week. Each department head may include any additional member of their department if there are special projects moving and they want that team member included.
By the end of this meeting, everyone has their marching orders and can start the week with clarity and focus. And with my team taken care of, I can focus on strategizing for the future of our organization, determining the next vertical we need to tackle to find an additional revenue stream.
In today's fast-paced business world, it's easy to lose sight of the importance of staying connected with your team. But by getting out of your office and onto the floor, regularly checking in with your team, and holding effective meetings, you can create a positive and supportive work environment that leads to success. So take the time to connect with your team today - you won't regret it.
