Right now, across America, people are being laid off—and they don’t even know why.

No performance warnings. No misconduct. Just: “Your position has been eliminated.”

What’s worse is that many of these people have given 10, 15, 20 years of their lives to companies that now treat them as overhead. Disposable. Expendable.

This isn’t a one-industry thing. It’s not a public-sector thing. This is happening in every corner of the workforce.

And it’s not because people are failing. It’s because the system is failing them.

Let’s Talk Numbers

According to recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and workforce studies:

  • 1.6 million layoffs occurred in the last 90 days alone.

  • The official unemployment rate is 4.2%, but the real number (U-6) that includes the underemployed and discouraged workers? Closer to 7.8%.

  • The top reasons given for job elimination? “Position no longer relevant” and “corporate restructuring.”

Now, let’s break it down even further:

By Age:

  • Workers aged 45–54 are 26% more likely to be laid off than younger employees.

  • Workers 55 and older face an almost 30% higher risk of termination—even when outperforming peers.

By Race and Ethnicity:

  • Black professionals are being laid off at nearly twice the rate of white counterparts.

  • Latino workers face a 40% higher likelihood of termination.

  • Asian American workers, especially in tech, are seeing cuts that represent up to 70% of some recent mass layoffs.

By Gender:

  • Women—especially Black and Latina women—are being disproportionately affected in fields like HR, healthcare admin, and education.

  • The glass ceiling isn’t just intact—it’s now shattering in reverse.

The Disconnect That Hurts Us All

We’re told the economy is strong:

  • GDP is up.

  • Corporate profits are soaring.

  • Executive compensation is ballooning.

But the rest of us are being gutted from the inside out.

So let’s be honest:

  • An economy is not healthy when it grows by discarding its people.

  • Leadership is not real when it demands sacrifice from workers but not from the ultra-wealthy.

  • Budget cuts shouldn’t come from Social Security and Medicare while billionaires get more tax breaks.

I believe in wealth. I believe in entrepreneurship. I even believe in billionaires.

But not at the expense of dignity, stability, and basic humanity.

We’re not trimming the fat—we’re cutting out the heart of the workforce.
