I’m sitting on the floor right now, hugging my dog, Buster, while the world keeps spinning like nothing is happening.
He isn’t waking up anymore. He lifts his head just enough to remind me he’s still here, then sinks back into sleep. When I took him outside, his body just gave out and he fell. No drama. No noise. Just gravity winning. Now he’s resting again. I can see his chest rise and fall. That soft, familiar rhythm that says not yet… but soon.
I keep telling myself not to cry. There’s already so much going on in my life. Bills. Pressure. Uncertainty. The kind of stuff that stacks up quietly until it’s heavy. And then this. Of course this. Because life has a twisted sense of timing.
I’m holding him close. My arms wrapped around him like I can somehow anchor him here. Like love might be enough to keep him from drifting. I whisper to him even though I don’t know if he can hear me. Maybe he can. Maybe he just feels it. Dogs always feel it.
He doesn’t have energy anymore. I can see that. There’s no fight left, no spark to stand up again. Just breath. Just warmth. Just presence. And somehow, that makes it harder and more sacred at the same time.
This isn’t loud grief. It’s quiet. Heavy. Still. It’s the kind of sadness that doesn’t ask permission. It just sits down next to you and stays.
I’m not trying to be strong right now. I’m just trying to be here. If this is the last thing I get to give him, then it will be this. My arms. My voice. My heart breaking right where he can feel it.
If love could save them, they’d live forever. And knowing that hurts like hell.
I don’t know what the next hour brings. I don’t know what the next breath brings. I just know that right now, Buster isn’t alone. And neither am I.
