THE GREAT SUMMER STANDSTILL: WHY MONDAY IS A MYTH AND PRODUCTIVITY IS A PERFORMANCE By William Rochelle
Let’s get one thing straight—Monday didn’t show up today. It phoned it in.
And so did most of the country.
Oh sure, you're technically "at work." But let’s not kid ourselves. Half your team is off-grid. The other half is "pivoting to strategy" from a beach chair. And you—hero that you are—just opened a spreadsheet you have no intention of editing.
You say you’re working. But if we checked your screen history right now, it’s giving:
Zillow beach houses
Flights to anywhere
“How much does a boat actually cost?”
Followed by a 27-minute spiral into YouTube yacht tours narrated by Australians
Welcome to the American Summer Work Paradox: A corporate culture where we glorify burnout 10 months a year, then pretend we don’t need rest in the two months we’re allowed to breathe.
But here’s the truth no one wants to say out loud: The world is tired. Not lazy. Not entitled. Not disengaged. Tired. Tired of pretending our value is tied to how many hours we’re on Slack. Tired of trading presence for performance. Tired of waiting for vacation to feel alive again.
And now—mid-summer, mid-July, mid-existential-career-crisis—there’s a choice to make. Keep performing like it's Q4… Or reclaim the season like your sanity depends on it. Because it does.
Here’s the brutal truth: Summer exposes the lie. The lie that we’re “building,” when we’re actually just surviving. The lie that rest is optional. The lie that showing up is the same as showing purpose.
And so, for the ones who feel stuck, stifled, and secretly googling “how to quit my job and move to Portugal”—this is your permission slip.
You do not owe the system your soul this summer. You owe yourself a reset.
So if the meetings aren’t meeting… If the follow-ups aren’t following… If your ambition is melting faster than your Wi-Fi signal at the lake house...
Good. Use it. Use the slowdown as a runway. Use the silence as a signal. Use the space not to “catch up” but to catch your breath.
Because history isn’t made in back-to-back Zooms. It’s made in the gaps. The quiet. The moments where you decide to live on purpose instead of by habit.
So take the meeting barefoot. Write the proposal from the porch. Dream bigger while the rest of the world is half-awake and sunburnt. And when they come back in September, blinking and wondering how you got so far ahead—just smile and say:
“I never checked out. I just checked in—with myself.”
This isn’t a vacation. It’s a revolution. And it starts the moment you stop pretending that “Monday” means anything anymore.
You’re not falling behind. You’re finally catching up… to the life you’ve been too busy to live.
Now go take the damn boat ride. And let that be the meeting that actually moves something.
End of message. Beginning of freedom.
