The Person Nobody Promotes But Everyone Needs
You know exactly who I am talking about. There is someone in your organization right now who does not have the biggest title or the loudest voice in the room. They do not send the boldest emails or give the most polished presentations. But when something needs to get done, really done, everyone knows whose name comes up first.
That person is the backbone of your operation. They are the one who catches the mistake before it becomes a crisis. The one who answers the question nobody else thought to ask. The one who makes the new hire feel like they belong before the official onboarding process gets around to it. They carry more weight than their job description describes and they do it without asking for recognition.
They see everything. Which processes actually work and which ones everyone has quietly worked around. Which relationships are strong and which ones are held together with patience and professionalism alone. Where the real bottlenecks live. Which meetings could be emails. Which decisions get delayed because nobody wants to own them. They carry an operational map of your organization that no consultant could ever replicate.
What They Know That Leadership Often Misses
They rarely volunteer this information without being asked. Not because they do not care. Because somewhere along the way they learned that the people with the power to change things are not always the people with the appetite to hear it. So they adapt. They absorb. They find workarounds. They keep the machine moving while quietly carrying the weight of watching preventable problems repeat themselves.
If you lead people, there is a version of this person on your team right now. The question is whether you know who they are. Whether you have ever stopped long enough to ask them what they see. Whether you have created the kind of environment where their knowledge actually has somewhere to go. Because if you have not, that knowledge does not disappear. It walks out the door when they finally decide they have given enough to a place that never bothered to look.
For hiring managers, this person is also the one your candidates meet before they meet you. They shape the first impression of your culture in ways no job description can. How they treat a candidate in the hallway, how they speak about the team in passing, whether they seem proud of where they work, all of that communicates something your interview script never will.
What This Person Deserves
They deserve to be seen. Not in a performance review. Not in a company all-hands where their name appears in a list. Seen in the real way. The way where a leader pulls them aside and says I notice what you do here. I notice how much of this place runs because of you. I want you to know that is not invisible to me.
They deserve to have their knowledge honored. The insight that person carries is not opinion. It is operational intelligence gathered from years of being close to the actual work. Leaders who tap into that resource do not just retain a valuable team member. They gain a competitive advantage that no org chart can capture and no budget line can buy.
For anyone reading this who recognized themselves in these words, I want to speak directly to you. Your contribution is real. The fact that it has not always been named does not mean it has not been felt. The right leaders, the ones worth working for, they see you. They know what you carry. Keep showing up the way you always have.
For leaders reading this, the ask is simple. Find that person this week. Not to add to their workload. Just to tell them the truth. That you see them. That the work matters. That they matter.
That conversation costs nothing.
The absence of it has been costing you everything.
Thanks for reading,
