You Were Warned. Now Pay Attention.

Six months ago I stood in front of you and told you to get ready. Not as advice. Not as a suggestion buried inside a LinkedIn post you double-tapped and kept scrolling. As a warning. I told you to know your supply chains end to end. Know your freight costs down to the decimal. Know where your raw materials actually originate, because if you manufacture a CPG product, your bottles, your caps, your dyes, your fragrance compounds, your scents are not all being born on American soil. I told you to get ahead of it. Stock your inventory. Protect your cash. Never let yourself sell out because the moment your shelves go empty, your cash flow stops breathing. Some of you moved on it. Some of you scrolled past it. This is for the ones who scrolled.

Spirit Airlines is gone. JetBlue is hemorrhaging. 17,000 people in South Florida went to sleep with a job and woke up without one. No warning. No severance call the night before. No runway. Just a press release, a cleared-out locker, and a life that looked completely different by noon. These are not small companies stumbling. These are billion-dollar operations collapsing in plain sight, and the people holding the bag are not the executives. They never are.

We bailed out the banks in 2008. We found the money fast. We always find the money fast when the institution is large enough. Those same banks accepted every dollar, shook every hand, then turned around and foreclosed on our homes. We were told they were too big to fail. I have never once heard that said about a family. I have never once heard that said about a small business owner who missed payroll by $400. The little guy does not get a bailout. The little guy gets the bill.

So when someone tells me they do not discuss politics in their business content, I want to ask them one question: what do you think business is? Politics is not a lane. It is not a topic you can opt out of the way you unsubscribe from an email list. Politics is the ground your business stands on. What is happening geopolitically right now is driving fuel costs. Fuel costs drive freight. Freight drives your cost of goods. Your cost of goods drives your margins. Your margins drive whether you make payroll this Friday or have a very hard conversation instead. Nonprofits are watching grants disappear. Government workers are watching entire departments dissolve. Nobody in any industry gets to sit this one out. Not one.

There is a virus getting attention right now and people are already lining up to tell you not to worry about it. I need you to remember something before you accept that comfort. Covid began moving in 2019. The official message from every direction all the way through February of 2020 was the same: stay calm, it is being contained, you are overreacting. By March of 2020 we had shut down an entire country. People took their final breath inside hospital rooms with no family present. No hand to hold. No goodbye that meant anything. I lost people. You lost people. We all did. So when someone steps to a microphone and tells you not to worry, that is precisely the moment to lean in and pay closer attention than you ever have before.

The world is not shifting gradually. It is lurching. It is moving in ways that hit your business, your workforce, your cash position, and your community before the headline even gets written. You do not have the luxury of waiting to see how things shake out. The ones who shake out are the ones who waited.

You were warned six months ago. This is the second warning. There will not be a third.
