Five More Minutes

Five more minutes, please.

It is cold outside the blanket, warm inside it, and Bruno is snoring like he pays half the mortgage. The television hums faintly in the living room, some accidental soundtrack to the morning because my dog apparently stepped on the remote in the middle of the night and turned it on. I roll over. Bruno is still asleep.

The second I lift my head, his eyes pop open. Are you ready? Are you ready to go? Are you ready?

No, Bruno. Not yet. 5 more minutes.

My body feels heavy. Not broken. Not defeated. Just… tired. The kind of tired that does not come from laziness but from carrying a lot. The mind has been running marathons while the body pretends it is fine. Sometimes the engine does not roar. Sometimes it hums.

Eventually, I slide from the bed to the couch. The house is quiet except for that low vibration of sound in the background. Neo soul jazz. Smooth. Unbothered. It does not rush me. It does not demand anything. It simply exists, like a soft handshake to the day.

That first cup of hot tea hits differently. Steam rising. Warmth wrapping around my hands. My throat feels slightly scratchy, which makes me wonder if I am fighting something off, or if this is simply what exhaustion feels like when it whispers instead of shouts.

There is a version of me that believes every morning must begin with velocity. Run. Grind. Produce. Achieve. Prove. That voice can be loud. Today, it is not.

Today, my body, mind and soul says rest.

The computer is on my lap. The job search tab is open. Life is still moving. Responsibility has not disappeared. Yet the energy is different. Calm instead of chaos. Intentional instead of frantic.

  • There are days that demand fire.

  • There are days that require discipline.

  • There are days that call for resilience.

Then there are days that simply ask for gentleness.

  • No frenzy.

  • No random muttering about what is not done.

  • No judgment about productivity.

Just a man and his dog.

Bruno eventually nudges my knee. He is patient, but he is also hopeful. Dogs are like that. They assume forward motion is inevitable. They trust that you will get up when it is time. They do not question your value on the mornings you move slower.

That might be the lesson.

We are not machines. We are seasons. Some mornings bloom. Some mornings hibernate. Productivity is not the only measure of purpose. Stillness has its own quiet return on investment. When you allow your nervous system to breathe, your clarity sharpens. When you refuse to shame yourself for resting, your strength rebuilds.

So yes, 5 more minutes.

Sometimes 5 minutes is not procrastination. It is preservation.

The world will still be there when I stand up. The emails. The applications. The strategy. The next move. All of it.

For now, there is jazz in the background. Steam rising from a cup of tea. A scratchy throat that reminds me I am human. A dog who believes in the inevitability of walks and sunshine.

And a man who understands that calm is not weakness.

It is preparation.

Thanks for reading,

William Rochelle, but you can call me Bill.
