Silence Is Not Neutral
There are moments in history when silence feels strategic. Polished. Professional. Safe.
This is not one of those moments. I have heard it too many times lately. “I do not discuss politics.” “I stay neutral.” “I prefer to remain in the middle.”
This is not about politics.
It is about humanity.
It is about women. It is about children.
It is about justice.
It is about who gets protected when power is on the line.
When basic human dignity is in question, neutrality is not wisdom. It is positioning.
The Myth of the Middle We have romanticized the middle of the road as if it represents maturity. As if it signals balance. As if it proves intelligence. There is a difference between thoughtful discernment and strategic detachment.
Remaining in the middle when harm is visible is not balance. It is insulation. It is self preservation dressed up as professionalism. When someone says they are protecting their brand, what they are often protecting is their access. Their comfort. Their upward mobility. Their proximity to power.
That is not inherently evil. It is human, let us call it what it is. If you straddle the fence to protect your brand, you have already chosen your brand.
What It Says About Us We are living in a time where people are watching. Not in a voyeuristic way, but in a moral way. They are watching who speaks. Who hedges. Who goes quiet when the air gets heavy.
Staying in the middle of the road says something. It says that your personal security ranks higher than public conviction. It says the risk is too high. It says the potential loss of opportunity outweighs the weight of your conscience. Again, that is human.
Leadership has never been defined by comfort. Leadership is defined by alignment. When what you believe privately and what you say publicly match. When your values cost you something and you choose them anyway.
Putting My Career on the Line I am not naive. I understand how the marketplace works. I understand how hiring committees think. I understand how executives assess risk. I also understand that justice has never advanced because everyone agreed it was convenient.
By speaking, I may lose opportunities. I may be labeled difficult. I may be seen as too bold. Too outspoken. Too unwilling to play the game. So be it. If the cost of access is silence in the face of harm, then the access was never aligned with me to begin with.
Will I Ever Find My Place? This is the real question. If I refuse to mute myself for the sake of comfort, does that mean I will never find my place? The honest answer is this. I may not find my place in rooms that require silence to survive.
That does not mean there is no place. It means there is a different room. A different table. A different alignment. When you stand for justice, you are not eliminating opportunity. You are filtering it. You are narrowing the field to environments that value courage over compliance.
That may take longer. It may be harder. It may not look like the traditional path. I would rather build slowly in alignment than rise quickly in contradiction.
Courage as Strategy
We talk about strategy in business as if it is purely financial. It is not. Strategy is also moral positioning.
Organizations that fear conviction fear disruption. Organizations that value conviction understand that integrity builds trust. If standing for women, for children, immigrants, for basic human dignity costs me a title, then the title was too small for my conscience.
I am not interested in being safe. I am interested in being aligned.
There is no room for silence when humanity is on the line.
Not for me.
