Some people do not enter your life to build with you. They enter to borrow from you. At first it feels like community because the conversations are constant, the favors are frequent, and your name stays in rotation. Then you hit a moment where you are the one who needs support, and suddenly the room gets quiet. Not dramatic quiet. Convenient quiet. If that sounds familiar, you are not paranoid. You are finally paying attention.

This is not about romance. This is about your circle.

It is about the difference between people who stand with you and people who stand near you. People who want you well, and people who want what you can do. People who clap for you because they believe in you, and people who clap so you keep performing.

Maturity does not come with regret. It comes with clarity.

Clarity shows you that a big circle can still be a lonely one. Clarity shows you that being popular is not the same as being supported. Clarity shows you that access is not affection, and proximity is not loyalty.

For most of my life, I have been a giver.

Ask and you shall receive. I am like the genie. If you need help and I can provide it, it happens. No interrogation. No conditions. No scorekeeping. I give without expectation, because that is how I am wired.

The problem is not everybody thinks the same way and that is okay. What is not okay is pretending they do.

Real life looks like this.

Somebody calls because they need a quick connect. You make the introduction. Somebody needs help putting a plan together. You take the time. Somebody is short and stressed. You show up. You do it because you can, because you care, because you remember what it feels like to be on the other side of a closed door.

Then your life gets heavy. Nothing dramatic. Just real. You need a check in. You need a favor returned. You need someone to show up with the same energy you have poured out.

That is when clarity starts talking.

Because the people who are in your corner do not vanish when you are not useful. They do not go missing when you stop being the solution. They do not treat your needs like an inconvenience.

They ask, what do you need. They mean it. Then they move.

The people who are in your circle for what they can get are different.

They are consistent when they are consuming. They are enthusiastic when you are giving. They are close when you are convenient. Then, the moment you need something, they suddenly become spiritual.

They will say, I have been so busy. They will say, I meant to call. They will say, you know I love you. They will say a lot of things that cost nothing.

This is where boundaries come in, not as punishment, but as protection.

Boundaries are not walls. Boundaries are receipts.

They are the line that says, I can still be generous without being drained. I can still help without being harvested. I can still love my people without letting people use my kindness like a credit card with no limit.

A boundary might sound like, I cannot do that right now. A boundary might sound like, I can help once, but I cannot carry it. A boundary might sound like, I need the same support I give. A boundary might sound like, I am not available for one sided relationships, even the non romantic kind.

Because the truth is, giving without expectation is beautiful.

It is also dangerous in a world full of people who feel entitled to access.

So the older you get, the smaller your circle gets. Not because you are cold. Because you are clear. You stop collecting connections and start choosing corners. You stop confusing familiarity with faithfulness. You stop calling everyone family when they only show up to eat.

If you are reading this and thinking, is he talking about me, here is the real answer.

If you support the people in your circle without keeping score, this is not about you. If you show up when it is not convenient, this is not about you. If you only call when you need something, and disappear when they do, then yes, you might want to sit with that.

No shame. Just clarity.

Keep giving if that is your spirit. Just give with guardrails. Give with discernment. Give with a circle that can hold you too. Because the goal is not to stop being generous. The goal is to stop being accessible to people who only show up to take.

My name is William Rochelle, but you can call me Bill.
