The High Price of Bad Decisions: DOGE, Alligator Alcatraz, and U.S. Troops at Home
Government waste has always been a sore spot. But lately, it’s gone from frustrating to staggering. We were promised “efficiency” and “savings.” Instead, what we got was ballooning costs, broken promises, and expensive distractions. Let’s break it down.
DOGE: The Efficiency Program That Wasted Millions
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was rolled out with Elon Musk’s backing to root out waste in federal spending. The promise? Billions in savings.
The reality?
Verified savings have been cut down multiple times—from tens of billions, to $8.5B, and now, closer to $1.4B when you factor in what was already planned or canceled.
In exchange, DOGE itself has cost hundreds of millions in staffing, technology, and “review” operations.
A Senate report goes further, estimating that DOGE may have actually created over $20B in new inefficiency through disruptions, contract miscounts, and operational fallout.
Translation: We didn’t save money—we spent it. DOGE is a net loss, plain and simple.
Alligator Alcatraz: $200M+ Down the Drain
Florida’s “Alligator Alcatraz” detention facility opened with a price tag north of $218M, plus contracts totaling more than $400M tied to the project. The catch? It’s closing within 60 days.
That means:
Taxpayers funded construction, staffing, and logistics for a facility that barely functioned.
Closing it will tack on another $15–20M in shutdown costs.
The state now has to find alternative housing for those detainees, at added cost, with nothing to show for the sunk investment.
Benefits? Zero. It was expensive theater, and taxpayers are left holding the bill.
Troops on U.S. Soil: At What Cost?
Deploying the National Guard and U.S. troops in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles wasn’t cheap.
D.C.: More than $1M per day in personnel costs.
Los Angeles: About $134M for a 60-day deployment.
Expand this to other states and you’re looking at hundreds of millions more in potential costs.
Here’s the kicker: other U.S. cities with higher crime rates never got troop deployments. So what did these missions accomplish? By most measures, not much. Beautification projects, crowd control, and political posturing—not measurable drops in crime.
Net effect: A costly distraction, not a solution.
The Bottom Line
DOGE promised billions in savings, delivered a fraction, and cost taxpayers hundreds of millions—possibly billions—in the process.
Alligator Alcatraz drained more than $200M for a facility that’s closing in under two months.
Troop deployments are costing millions per day, with no clear benefits in safety or long-term stability.
The common thread? Big promises, bigger bills, and no return on investment. Taxpayers are footing the tab for political stunts that do nothing to make America safer, stronger, or more efficient.
See you next Sunday.
