Man, I am super excited about where technology is headed. As I take a retrospective look at the way technology has evolved and how it continues to shape our lives, I can't help but feel both mind-blown and optimistic about the future. Let's dig into the incredible evolution of technology by focusing on these seven aspects: your childhood television, computer, telephone, VCR, CDs, DVDs, and your wallet.
Childhood Nostalgia and Wired Days
When I was a child, we were the TV remote control, and most of the items we used were connected to an outlet in our home. Your wallet carried cash, and if my mom didn't take enough out on Friday, she had to write a check at the local grocery store.
The Phone Revolution
Fast forward to today, where your television, movies, music, camera, credit card - they're all wrapped into what we call a phone. But is it really a phone? It's so much more, and it keeps evolving. When the iPhone launched in 2007, it changed everything and laid the foundation for the onslaught of social media.
Just 4 years ago, my phone averted a crisis for me when I left my wallet at the office. I paid for groceries and got cash back with my iPhone, realizing that my wallet had become pretty much extinct.
The Palm Scan Era
Yesterday, I discovered the option for a palm scan at Whole Foods. You hover your palm over the scanner, and just like that, the checkout process is done. Amazon One palm recognition is launching across its Whole Foods stores, and this means no need for wallets or even phones to pay.
Invisible Technology and Future Innovations
I was so impressed with this technology that I recalled a Ted Talk with Imran Chaudri, one of the engineers behind the iPhone. He is working towards making technology invisible - a sleek pin that you wear, answering the phone with your palm, and communicating in different languages with just a touch to your chest.
A Few Concerns
I do have concerns, particularly about the AI-driven nature of this new technology. The constant monitoring of our actions might be a little big brotherish. However, with the emphasis on privacy and safety, I feel less concerned.
Evolve or Get Left Behind
No matter how you slice it, technology is moving, and moving fast. It's a thrilling ride, filled with retrospectives, futuristic glimpses, and a ton of mind-blowing innovations. From being my parents' T.V. remote to witnessing palm recognition payment methods, the evolution has been incredible.
I will end this the same way I started. As we keep up with these advancements, let's also pause to appreciate how far we've come and ponder where we're headed. Don't forget to watch the linked Ted Talk in the comments, and stay excited about the never-ending journey of technological evolution!
