Time. It's an elusive thing, isn't it? When we have it in abundance, it's easy to squander. But when it slips through our fingers, we're left grappling with regret and longing. Our relationships, particularly with our family, often stand at the intersection of time and emotions, governed by a complex dynamic that's as unpredictable as it is profound.

Family is a blend of love, rivalry, understanding, and miscommunication. It's the siblings that know us at our best and at our worst. The very people who, despite all differences, remain bonded by shared history and familial connection.

Siblings: A Unique Bond

Consider siblings. Ask each one separately about their memories, experiences, and perceptions, and you'll likely end up with varying answers. Who's mom's favorite? Who's the most successful? Who's the most difficult? Each answer differs, dictated by the unique perspective of the individual.

I'm reminded of my cousin Sheila, who came to live with us at the age of three. The same age I was at the time. To me, Sheila was and still is my sister, the only girl among three boys. Special, protected, beloved.

Our adulthood brought us even closer. We coordinated holiday plans, navigated family dynamics, and forged an understanding of our own. But we also knew our limits. Day 3 together was our threshold, and any tragic attempt to stretch it to a fourth day would inevitably lead to an argument.

Unbreakable Bonds? Not Always.

Despite disagreements, family tends to fold back into the fold, pretending as if nothing occurred. The bond feels unbreakable, until it isn't.

2020 brought challenges for many, and my own life was no exception. As I found myself navigating losses, traveling cross-country, and assisting with family, my relationship with Sheila evolved in unexpected ways.

We planned a road trip, but it ended on the dreaded day 4 in Georgia. She left without a proper goodbye, and my anger festered. I resolved not to be the bigger person, not to reach out, not to mend the broken connection.

Time's Up! Treasure the Time Together

The sad realization is that time has a way of sneaking up on us, and our stubbornness can have tragic consequences.

I recently discovered that Sheila has been given a limited time to live. My emotions have spiraled into a cyclone of anger, sadness, confusion, and worry. Anger at her silence, sadness at the guilt of our lost time, confusion about her condition, and worry about her well-being.

I'm reminded now, more than ever, that time is a gift, and it's fleeting. We mustn't let trivial squabbles turn into rifts that deepen with each passing day.

To those reading, heed my words: Don't let time slip through your hands. Be the bigger person. Make the call, say what needs to be said before it's too late.

For me, today, I pray that time is on my side, allowing me the opportunity to say "I love you" once more.

Family, with all its complexities, remains a tricky gift. Treasure the time you have together, for it is precious, and once lost, it can never truly be regained.
