I did not write The Bogeyman Was Built to chase controversy. I wrote it because I finally understood that most of what we call fear was never born in us. It was taught, repeated, handed down, and sometimes used against us until we believed it was ours.
For most of my life, I have watched people carry things they never created. Good people walking into rooms already apologizing for being there. Talented people shrinking because somebody once told them they were too much, not enough, too late, too different, too loud, too quiet, too Black, too gay, too old, too honest, or too broken to matter.
The bogeyman was never just a monster in the dark. He was a warning. He was the shape fear took when people wanted control but did not want to admit they were controlling anyone. He became the person we were told to distrust, the truth we were told not to say, and sometimes the version of ourselves we were taught to hide.
When I say the bogeyman was built, I mean fear was constructed on purpose. Through language, policy, silence, religion, media, family stories, and workplace culture. Built every time someone decided one group should be protected by fear while another should be defined by it.
I have seen this fear in business. Leaders who use it because they never learned how to build trust. Companies that confuse silence with loyalty and intimidation with accountability. People working hard not because they were inspired, but because they were afraid of what happened if they stopped moving. That gets results for a season. It never builds anything healthy.
I have also seen it in people who were never given permission to believe they belonged. I know what it feels like to question whether the room was made for you. To have the experience, the scars, the vision, and still feel a world asking you to prove your humanity before it respects your work.
There comes a point when you stop negotiating with fear and finally name it. That is where this book came from. The part of me that was tired of whispering around hard truths. The part that wanted to know why so many people are still trapped inside stories they did not choose.
This is not written from bitterness. It is written from awakening. I am not interested in keeping people angry. I want people to see the pattern, because once you see it, you stop confusing the cage for your natural size.
The book asks hard questions because soft questions cannot break hard conditioning. Who built the fear? Who benefits when people stay afraid? Who gets protected by the story? Who was turned into the monster so someone else could stay innocent?
Here is the truth. If fear can be built, it can be dismantled. If a story can be repeated, it can be rewritten. If a person can be taught to shrink, they can be reminded how to stand.
The Bogeyman Was Built is available now on Amazon. If any of this reached you, I would be honored if you read it, shared it, and let it become part of a larger conversation about fear, identity, leadership, and the courage to tell the truth.
